How to prevent or reduce hair loss

Many men worry about going bald. While not all men who lose their hair worry about it, it can be a source of insecurity and even depression for some. While genetics certainly play a role in balding, there are ways to prevent it or slow down the process.

Your barber may observe that your hair is beginning to thin in specific areas or in general and may mention it to you. Don’t be offended. It may be the warning you need to take action, or it may simply be the time to reconsider your regular haircut in preference for a new look.

Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in men. A combination of genetics and hormones causes it. The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which gives men their body hair, deeper voices, and heightened muscle mass, is also responsible for male pattern baldness. DHT shrinks hair follicles, which makes it difficult for hair to grow.

One of the best ways to prevent balding is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise can help to keep your hair healthy and strong. In addition, avoiding stress and taking steps to manage any existing medical conditions can also be helpful.

Eat Right

Studies have shown that Iron intake may play a more significant part in hair loss than people suspect. Treatment for hair loss is more effective when paired with raised Iron consumption levels.

You don’t have to start taking supplements – there are plenty of fruits and vegetables high in Iron. These include dark leafy greens like spinach, legumes, beans and peas, nuts and seeds, potatoes with their skins, mushrooms, acorn squash, and raspberries. Red meat is also great for iron, but for overall health, go easy on that.

Men need less Iron per day, at just 8.7mg, compared to women who require 14.8mg in their younger years, dropping to 8.7mg for those over 50.

Check your medication

Some medications have side effects. For some drugs, the side effects can include hair loss. These include:

  • Beta-blockers for high blood pressure
  • Antibiotics and Antifungals
  • Lithium for bipolar disorder
  • Antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs
  • Steroids (such as those taken for asthma)

Many other drugs impact the growth of your hair, so if you are worried, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Hair loss from medication is usually temporary and stopping the drug should result in regrowth. However, be aware that the cause of drug-related balding can sometimes result in a shedding event 2-3 months after you either first took the drug or after you stopped using it. If this happens, it should regrow.

Medicated shampoo for hair loss

There is no cure for male pattern baldness, but there are treatments that can help slow down or stop the progression of the condition. Minoxidil shampoos, such as Regaine and Numan, are topical medications available over the counter. They help stimulate hair growth and are most effective in men who have recently started to lose their hair.
