Our expert barbers at Men’s Grooming Ireland are always here to help to teach you how to trim a beard. But, when you don’t have time to get to your favourite barber, here’s our helpful 7-step guide on how to trim a beard at home using electric clippers:

1. Grow your beard out
   Allow your beard hair to grow in length for around 4-6 days.
2. Trim it dry
   Always start with a dry beard!
3. Brush
   Give your beard a thorough going over with a beard comb or brush. Brushing gets the hairs into shape and prepares them for trimming.
4. Trim the beard
   Ensure that your electric clippers have graded numbers and a half setting. This allows for some flexibility in choosing your preferred length.If you’re unsure how short you would like your beard to be, it’s best to start trimming with a higher clipper grade. You can then repeat the process with a lower grade, if you decide you want your beard to shorter:
   – Grade 1 means the hair will be cut to between 1-3 mm in length.
   – Grade 2 , 2-6 mm in length.
   – Your clipper may be set also from 1/2 inches.In cases where the thickness of the beard differs on various parts of the face, it’s best to use a short grade on thicker areas such as the chin and moustache area.
5. Neaten the throat
   Set your clipper on 0 and remove the clipper guard. The teeth should be closed. Tilting your head back slightly, use the flat side on your clipper to create a line. For the neck, start at the Adam’s apple and create a line from two to three fingers above the Adam’s apple. Generally speaking, full beards only look good if the throat area has clear, symmetrical contours.If you would prefer a natural finish to your beard at the throat, set your trimmers to a grade lower than the grade you used for the main part of your beard.
6. Edge the cheeks
   Getting the contours right and symmetrical on your cheeks is very hard to do by yourself. Which is why we always advise you to visit your barber first. S/he will create the perfect lines to suit your face shape and then you can follow these when shaving at home. However, if you must try this at home, it’s best to trim the edges little by little so that you don’t remove too much.Beard combs that come with a shaping tool are available online and can be a good idea if you plan to trim your beard yourself.
7. And finally…
   Apply a few drops of shaving oil into the beard when finished to ensure the beard looks healthy. Remember, it’s easier to get clean contours if you trim your beard regularly. Long beard hairs spoil the line and create their own fuzzy contours.
